Free WiFi for Verizon's FiOS, HSI Customers

Eric Rabe posted in PolicyBlog Broadband  on July 28, 2009, 08:40 PM EST
Free Wi-Fi service from Verizon for millions of FiOS Internet and High Speed Internet (HSI) customers is available now, we have announced.  The new service is available at thousands of hotspots around the country at no extra charge for qualified Verizon broadband customers.  More details are on the Verizon At Home blog here.

When I tried to register for the WiFi service the link took me to a error message that said: Verizon Wi-Fi currently supports: Windows XP (32-bit only) and Vista Please upgrade your operating system before proceeding with the installation or use an alternate computer that meets the minimum system requirements. bad enough that you only support one vendor's operating system (and only a subset of that vendors offerings) but you add insult to injury by refering to the need to use a "alternative computer" as a "upgrade". My alternative computer runs MAC/OS. My main computer is Linux. Worse I can not do this sign up from an internet cafe. I need to bring the "alternative" computer into my home. What will the neighbors think? When is Verizon going to wake up and support the rest of the world?

Just wondering if you plan on having Verizon Fios at Midtown Miami. I'm moving there in October. The condo name is Midtown 4 and address is 3301 NE 1st AVE UNIT # 2410. If you guys do not have service here I highly recommend it as this is an up and coming area and they plan on building 6 more condos Midtown 1-8 total and is young urban professionals. Thanks.

Hi we are a large condo bldg in Ocean city, md and are considering options for internet/tv. How do we find out if a rollout is on the horizon before we sign a long term contract with another service.

Definitely would like to see free WiFi supported on the Mac.

I'm a software engineer and web developer and every computer I own and even my friends own run Mac OSX. For most of us, this was a decisions based on stability, security and in some cases - elegance. When trying to sign up for this free service, the error message stating that you do not support OSX suggests "upgrading" to windows. You may want to consider changing this wording a bit. Rather than simply conveying that you don't currently support it, the wording actually has a negative connotation suggesting that by not running windows you are making a bad decision. A decision that Verizon does not agree with. The phrase "upgrade" suggests that OSX is a lesser operating system. This is an ignorant statement that simply plays on the lack of knowledge of the layman. Instead of insulting people, maybe you could simply state, "We're sorry, but our software doesn't support your operating system. We apologize for the inconvenience, but if you would like to use Verizon Free Wi-Fi you will need to use a computer running Microsoft Windows." Optionally you could offer an olive branch and provide the suggestion of running Windows in boot-camp? Thus placing a positive spin that you are at least trying to offer a solution. This is just a thought, but I believe this is a commonly used practice of PR Firms commonly referred to as "Spin". It couldn't hurt and would make Verizon look much better. Also, since you are obviously not aware - the flyer at the Verizon stores advertising Free Wi-Fi SHOWS A MACBOOK ON THE FRONT SIDE!!! Genius.

Wow! I was about to switch to Verizon DSL because of the free wifi and now I see it won't work with my Macbook. Guess it's not time to switch. Why doesn't Verizon support Mac?

Any plans for an Iphone app for the wi-fi access?

I've noticed that this was published in 2009. I've had Verizon Fios since August of '08 and was wondering if you need to call a certain number to gain WiFi access. I want it for an iPod Touch. Can somebody give me answers, please? I also have Windows XP.

I'm unable to install wifi on my laptop, I get the following message. The flow will not proceed due to Missing Hand-off Parameters: ssotoken PUID ssotoken value= PUID value= step value=wifireg I just completed the installation with no problems on my netbook. I called verizon for assistance and they said it's because I'm using a comcast connection. I used the same connection on the netbook--no problems. When I pointed this out to him....he said I guess you know more than me and was extremely rude...put me back on hold and came back to give me HP's 800#!!! I waited on hold 10 minutes for this kind of help? Doesn't seem like it should be that difficult to get help. Any suggestions?

Still no support for Win7, linux, etc.? Why is there even a client side application needed for this? Currently still a useless product enhancement for me, a business FIOS user.

I too would like to see free WiFi supported on the Mac.
Edmond Torbey posted on 2/5/2010 4:39:52 PM
Verizon seems to be full of hot air regarding Mac support. Request can be found throughout the web all with the same response from Verizon, "We are still working on it" Ask any verizon phone Mart and get the same response..."Yes we support Macs, download the software online" If it takes this long to come up with a small program, I would find another developer.

The flow will not proceed due to Missing Hand-off Parameters: Error on many Windows OPerating systems and versions .. NO help Thanks Verizon

Will Verizon Fios free WIFI be available at NJ Transit train stations? The other service providers (Comcast and Cabelvision) provide this service.

I have a work laptop and want to use the Wi-Fi without installing any additional software, is this possible? If not its a pretty useless 'feature'

Signed up for a triple play bundle today with wifi access being one of the advertised benefits. I was seriously disappointed when I attempted to sign up and the Mac Operating System was not supported. That's weak. I've never encountered difficulty with wifi access and the Mac OS before this.

I am trying to determine if I am eligible for the free Wifi service. When I enter my telephone number or account number I get a message stating that it can not be verified. I have been a Fios customer for iver 4 years.
Hank Caruso posted on 4/11/2010 8:38:29 AM
I am a fios customer and qualify for the free wifi access, but I am a mac user and an iPhone user so can't access it. I will be posting this on mac forums so those Mac people thinking about making the move to FIOS can be informed to this "feature" of FIOS.
Mitch Pilchuk posted on 5/1/2010 4:14:00 PM
How do I get this to work for my iPod Touch? So far, I can't even get it to work on my WinXp system. The flow will not proceed due to Missing Hand-off. Pretty lame considering my neighborhood is blanketed with xFinity and Cablevision wifi. I may have to reconsider Fios.
semifore posted on 5/9/2010 9:22:00 PM
Personally, I believe that a class action suit on behalf of all Verizon customers who signed-up for packages that included wi-fi access but never were informed that it was useless for Mac users is in order. It is outrageous that Verizon does not accommodate Mac.

We have Wi Fi, I'm trying to get it on my Ipod. I can get it on my Ipod everywhere else but not when I'm home. What could be the problem?
Ida Fentress posted on 6/8/2010 3:15:05 PM
So, you clever Verizon people, no WiFi for your benighted customer base with those funky, niche Mac's! I gotta ask, do you even know how many Mac users are Verizon Triple-Play subscribers? Since making this service available to Mac users would be relatively trivial from the technology and process standpoints, there must be something else driving this decision other than simple managerial incompetence. I can only think it's because AT&T and Apple are using the iPhone to eat Verizon's mobile lunch and this is some infantile way of striking back. Oh, so lame!
David Rosenberg posted on 6/19/2010 10:07:35 AM
Unbelievable that Verizon still doesn't offer free Wi-Fi for Mac. Funny how Verizon's wi-fi provider, Boingo, supports Macs... Hey, Eric Rabe - are you even reading this? You haven't posted anything here in nearly a year! What's Verizon's official response? What's it going to take to make this happen?
Eric Sokolsky posted on 8/11/2010 1:13:31 PM
No Verizon wifi for Mac? And people are wondering why? It must be a coincidence that only AT&T gets to service the iPhone. C'mon people. "We can't support Mac operating systems?" Really... I picture Tony Soprano in a back room saying, "You want my wifi, I want your iPhone".
James Desrosiers posted on 9/2/2010 8:14:31 AM
I use an Apple IPOD Touch when out of the house and am amazed that your free wifi access doesn't support anything but some variants of MS Windows. Most ISP's that provide free access to their customers at their hot spots only require your id and password to connect. As a FIOS and Verizon Wireless customer for many years, I will certainly be considering my options in the future. It would be better that you didn't offer the free wireless at all as you leave so many in the dark.
Norm Edwards posted on 10/7/2010 4:03:09 PM
Surely this problem will be solved (WiFi / Mac OS X) now that Verizon and Apple are dancing together with the iPhone?? Let's hear an update.
Colin McNaught posted on 1/14/2011 5:42:56 AM
Now that the iPhone has come to Verizon will Mac users finally be allowed access to the free wifi that Windows users have had for several years?
Steve S posted on 1/14/2011 4:28:48 PM
Our household has Linux, Mac OS X, and iPod Touch devices we would love to use on Verizon WiFi. Please extend support to these alternative, but very widely used platforms. Thanks!

I am so disgusted with Verizon, when I signed up this was the tipping point for me the sales agent assured me that WiFi access was totally compatible with mac, even went so far as to say he had friends that no longer use WiFi Cards (cellular) as they can access the internet everywhere … so I asked you mean I could access the internet pretty much everywhere? YES! And being that sounded too good to be true I repeatedly asked and confirmed that it would work but low and behold it does not work this has been a total waste of time and money and now VZ wants to charge me termination fees. GREAT COMPANY!
Richard posted on 2/22/2011 5:26:36 PM
I too would like to be able to access the wi-fi with an ipod touch or ipad. I see Comcast and Optimum have a simple log in to access their free wi-fi services. I would like to see the same thing for Verizon. In reading this posting board, Verizon really should do better with this. I have a laptop operating Windows Vista so I don't think I'm affected that way but I feel bad for all these folks that use other systems. And I totally believe the person that said a VZ sales person assured them that it would work with MAC. Unfortunately, they do say whatever it takes to get the sale. You have to get things in writing I think.
Elisa posted on 4/7/2011 5:56:46 PM
Don't feel bad, I got suckered the same way. Free wifi, hooray! Only problem is the only device I have that supports it is my desktop at home. Not my mobile phone, not my Android tablet. You got me there Verizon. A customer for 24 hours and already dissatisfied. No worries through I've registered for Wifi and distributed the account information to several of my friends. If I can't use the service that I'm paying for hopefully they surely will.
Chad posted on 5/25/2011 5:31:41 AM
It has been nearly two years since the announcement of Verizon WiFi availability - but there still is no support for free WiFi on a Mac? I understood initially that there were allegedly some obstacles to making the service immediately available for Mac users - but TWO years??? I also don't understand why there are no replies/updates about this concern - clearly many others have expressed this same concern previously. Please provide some update and explanation. Thanks.
Rich posted on 6/30/2011 12:06:09 PM
Please update this. Why is Mac OS X not supported yet. And, I'd also love to know why your misleading add still shows a mac book pro in the add if you don't support Mac OS X? Very misleading.
