Verizon CTO Named Top Mobile Influencer

John 'CZ' Czwartacki posted in PolicyBlog Wireless  on September 10, 2009, 01:55 PM EST

One of the most astute observers in the technology space, Om Malik, assisted by his very able GigaOm team, is hosting their annual conference on the state of the mobile internet, Mobilize.

They are planning to publish an annual list of the 15 most influential people in the mobile internet each year, in conjunction with this conference.

This year’s list, out today, is heavy with big names, not only in the mobile space but in defining the future of technology as well.  It’s replete with well-known names like Steve Jobs of Apple and Julius Genachowski, Chairman of the FCC, as well as with key players at leading companies like Motorola, Google, Facebook, and Amazon. It’s a quite a group.

I was pleased, but not terribly surprised, that our own Chief Technology Officer Dick Lynch made the list.

Here's part of what GigaOm said about the effort Lynch leads at Verizon:

(Verizon has) the guts to invest in a rapid rollout of 4G technology and lay fiber to the necessary base stations in support — and anticipation — of the growing demand for mobile broadband

Congrats Mr. Lynch! As the only network guy on there, it speaks volumes about you and the Verizon network you help run.

move away from the mentality of the network servicing iTards: if I want to run a voip app don't stop me. Since Verizon Wireless levies a sixty dollar per month PENALTY for attaching a 'smart' phone to one's account it seems like it would be unpopular to opt for the draconian AT&T policy. Listen... very... closely I would like an HTC phone because I use my phone like a PHONE :gasp: It is the only suitable replacement for my e815... a PHONE. I want a PHONE to: * have excellent audio fidelity as BOTH a handset AND a speakerphone (built-in) * have excellent signal reception- and transmission I do not run games on my phone: I have a PSP and a PDA. I do not want to view the interweb on my phone: I have a laptop I do not want to watch "high definition" or SD videos on my phone: don't r*pe video. I have a laptop. Stop wasting money developing the platform to distribute games, music, video, and interweb on PHONES!! Focus on the PHONE as a PHONE. When you have MASTERED PHONES and PHONE CALLING QUALITY then whatever... but you are not remotely close to that offering. Thank goodness for FCC mandated Open Access!! I want asterisk level filtering- and control over the calls to- and through my phone. That is a network/PHONE issue on which to focus... seems like something that should light up the eyes of any CIO.. or CTO in this case.
