Preserving the Open Internet

PolicyBlog’s own David Young appeared on a Brookings Instition panel immediately following FCC Chairman Genachowski’s remarks on “net neutrality.”

These were among the comments David offered on behalf of Verizon immediately after the speech:

“We share the chairman’s goal of preserving an open and robust Internet.  Our concern is will it stifle innovation and growth.”

“The Internet is a work in progress, and we really don't know what it's going to look like five years from now.  We believe that new capabilities will be created by innovation in the Network, and those new capabilities and innovation should not be precluded by regulation."

“We need to look at the facts; I’m pleased to hear that the chairman only intends to do only what is needed but no more.  … We need to see what are the problems that need to be fixed and what are the examples that require a dramatic change.”

The internet must be preserved as an open platform. This is what has made it popular to this day.

Net Neutrality is socialism. That's gone. Good. Let's move on to full deregulation to allow the actual free market to motivate verzion to not shape- or redirect bit flows. The market will not tolerate priority tagged data for extortion pricing. Please do not try that to find out the hard way. I would like to trust verizon, but your other property, Verizon Wireless, has a long tradition of r*ping device firmware to cripple user choice, stifle market diversity, and keep draconian control over your userbase. (v710 class action lawsuit loss ring any bells?) You can see why verizon will be fighting an uphill battle to regain trust. Why don't you start with Set Top Boxes? How about the QIP7100? It would be awesome to use the device at the motorola engineers intended. * I would like to be able to use the USB ports. * I would like to be able to use the ethernet port. * I would like to be able to use the firewire port. * I would like to be able to use it as a component in my PVR I am not an iTard! I do not need- nor want your proprietary DVR. Innovation? Allow alternative firmware on your STBs and Westell MoCa gizmos. Or maybe you would like to return to Token Ring? Train your tech "support" staff on ALL the features of the westell 9100em. No support for QoS? It doesn't matter that the feature is broken per se? Now you want to upsell to "premium" support? ahaha no. There is no technological limit preventing you from deploying FIOS to homes over ethernet. You already have to wire a house with RG6. Why not CAT5e? 'Allow' home users to choose their own adventure PVR especially now that the OEM M-card craziness has been repealed. Why continue Rube Goldberb 'R&D' on coax?? Soon I will be able to have an arbitrary number of M-cards in my media center (PVR). I need not pay the license to use a GRID via verizon to the 'inventor' of a TV grid. I would be able to source my guide data elsewhere. Customer satisfaction? I have little from verizon now. It could be worse: I could have continued to be "accidentally" overcharged by timewarner on a REGULAR basis.

WHY does policy blog NOT-respect use of whitespace in submitted comments? This is a new line. This is also a new line. If you do not see three lines this comment has been destroyed *by policy*. This is UNACCEPTABLE.

In some countries blogging is not legal and being regulated. What are they (Government officials )thinking about the techno innovations?Even how much they prohibited the use of internet, it will only gain more support as the rest world keeps on using it as part of business.
