ETF, Explained

Jim Gerace posted in PolicyBlog Wireless  on December 07, 2009, 01:34 PM EST

We fight day-in, day-out to meet and exceed our customers' expectations. We do that by constantly improving how we do business.

Our declining early termination fee, or ETF, makes it possible for a broad array of Americans who might not otherwise be able to afford broadband connections to be active participants in the online world. Too many people still can’t afford to buy a PC for Internet access, and a subsidized handset option can be a great option.

Nobody is required to pay an ETF.  You always have the choice of buying a mobile phone at full price with no ETF. Or you can buy a device at a discount with a 1- or 2-year contract.  If you stay with your contract, you don’t pay a fee at all.

Why do you have such losers working your Union jobs? Do you allow the Union to run the Company? I know of workers that lied on thier empolement apps and have had fights in your offices and still are allowed to keep a job because the Union will not allow the Company to fire them. I also know of a union emplyee that stole on his COmpany credeit card, sleeps at work, filed false education claims and most recently falsified his work performance records. He is still in your employ. What gives? Do you ever fire anyoneor does the Union tell you when you can hire and fire?

ETF...I understand the concept....what I don't understand is if you are in effect recovering the price of the modem/phone over the two years of the contract...ie..say 10 dollars a month going towards the cost of the device, why then if I DON'T get a new device does the price of my monthly serice not decline after that amount has been recovered? Or if I bring my own device and you have no overhead as to recovering your loss on the device, why is my service not cheaper? Seems that if I don't get a new modem/phone every two years I am actually PUNISHED. I would really appreciate an answer to this question, as I have to admitt I am somewhat baffled.

It's hard to be a corporate shill Jim, isn't it? Or are you paid enough that it doesn't matter?
