Wouldn't it be more convenient to offer Verizon Wireless phones with ATSC chipsets to view the actual digital TV feed from local broadcasters, than to use an expensive data plan to download the video?

The Asia and Europe markets have dozens of phones that receive free-to-air digital TV. Why hasn't Verizon Wireless made strides to deliver the same option to US consumers?

The US marketplace isn't set up for free-to-air digital TV - broadcasters and wireless companies and consumers haven't figured out a way to make the business arrangements work. We're very happy and comfortable using a couple ways to provide simultaneous broadcasts right now. V CAST Mobile TV, which uses an independent FLO network, provides broadcast-quality resolution and 30 frames/second - with absolutely no effect on our existing 3G network. The service and devices are so new that only a small portion of our customers currently have the ability to see V CAST Mobile TV. For the vast majority of our customers who can use V CAST video on their existing handsets, that's an option as well for select live multicast events such as the debate. Good quality, but not as great as with V CAST Mobile TV.
