Andy Abramson passed along news that Amtrak in the Northeast Corridor is adding WiFi to its stations. Now don’t get me wrong, more connectivity is a good thing and some of the stations in question are quite nice. (Union Station in DC is my favorite.)
However, I for one spend far more time on the train than in the station (knock wood so my next train isn’t 11 days late). Until they wire the trains themselves with WiFi, you can’t beat EVDO for en route productivity.
I still get a thrill when I can update PolicyBlog, share feeds, and manage online social networks while traveling at 100+ mph on the way to and from DC (added bonus: views of some of the finest backyard tool sheds, scrap heaps, and strip malls in America!)
In fact, when I updated my facebook page -- via Twitter -- on my last trip, I got a real time request to use Ustream.tv to broadcast video from the train live.
Maybe next time.
I’m sure my Verizon Wireless Broadband Access (Rev A) card can handle it, but not sure I could.
UPDATE:
One of the commenters below is the one who suggested I stream live video. Guess which one. (Hint: Not the A-List VoIP blogger who uses our own PolicyBlog to plug T :-P )
