Sounds like it might just be a mater of your definition of a fire. When you drill through an electric line it sparks, creates a char mark, and usually smokes a little. By McNamara's definition this makes it a "fire". I personally wouldn't ever call it that but it also makes sense that it might technically be a "small fire". As long as the home owner is being taken care of I don't see why it really maters. I installed cable for a year-and-a-half. I hit an electrical line once (though not the main feed). While not every technician will hit an electrical line anyone who has installed cable for a few years will at least know someone who has. It may not be extremely common but its going to happen every now and then when you do that type of work. The important thing is that the company does the right thing and takes care of the mistake for the home owner. It doesn't sound like there is any disagreement that the issue is being remedied. Hey, maybe the home owner will even get a free year of FIOS out of the deal ;-). I wish FIOS was even available where I live!

Interesting to note in the pics that there is no electrical wire present in them for a drill bit to hit. As far as I can make out there is no hole that was being drilled and no wire that was hit in the photos. Implying that this is the area of concern by posting them in this comment, it's a substantial lack of collaboration not to see the wires that are at the central point of the issue. "Here are two photos of the area where, as we have said, our technician’s drill hit an electric wire." Where?

Interesting...your photos contain no hint whatsoever of the actual electrical line (or the immediate area around it) affected. Why is that?

No smoke, no fire... no wire? As far as I can see, there was no wire for the tech to drill through to cut power. Are these photos of the correct location?

Well, I think that the complaining about Paul McNamara is ridiculous and points towards some mistakes on Verizon's part. Why defend yourself so tenuously against a random blogger? I say suck it up, take it on the chin, and act with class -- and not like a little child who got caught breaking Mom's favorite picture on the mantelpiece.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see the wire that was 'hit' in the photos. Do you perhaps have another view that actually shows the initial damage?

Ahahahahahahahhahah. Just wandered in off /. and this whole thing is really funny to me. First you've got the over active blogger (Paul) who's trying to badmouth Verzon and make a mountain out of a molehill (I have no idea why, probably was treated badly by Verizon in the past), and then you've got this marketing guy trying to spin it into a positive for FiOS. Both are over the top but I can't decide who is more annoying... Eww, wait a minute. I bet those pics are doctored, I can't see any electrical wires at all. Verizon is pulling the wool over our eyes! Who you gonna believe? A marketing joker or a two-bit blogger??? Ahahahahahahahhahahahahahah Go ahead make my day and censor this.

A) Why do you censor your comments? B) Why make such a big deal out of this? If the company covered all the damages, why would a "giant" corporation like Verizon go out and say there was no fire and get involved in such a dispute. Seems Verizon should be a bit more professional than that. C) Bring FIOS to my neighborhood! :) I want FIOS TV + Internet Service as soon as possible! HEHE!

Wow, if this is how you treat all your customers I'll make sure to never be one. Honestly, if the Fire Department says there was a fire, there was a fire. Reimburse the guy and move on. You also might want to work on your customer relations skills.

Having been a victim (customer) of Verizon for a lot of years, I can understand a blogger wanting to get back at them, but - if the photos are actually showing the entire story - there wasn't much of a fire. Probably not enough to call it one. I was a remodeler for years & have also drilled & cut wires. There's some smoke and, in a case like this, a possibility for a fire. Enough to warrant getting the fire department out to chop open the area. Better safe than sorry. FIOS? I can't even get DSL. Verizon sold me DSL once & I liked it. Unfortunately, they disconnected it & wouldn't give it back, even though my bill was always paid & on time. A clerical error, they said 5 days after they shut off my phone & DSL. While they turned the former back on, they wouldn't give back my DSL & deleted my Verizon email account, resetting it for me, losing all my emails. Yes, I can understand why someone would want to bash Verizon. The lack of class by their officers isn't surprising either. Big business who has no time for individual customers.

Wow... good attempt at spin. Leave this poor guy alone, fix his house, and give him a year of free service. You guys should do a hell of a lot better than this when it comes to PR. Sad, sad, sad.

I do find it odd that A) no images of the damaged wire. And the newly added pictures are from after the electrical repair. Can we please see the other pictures?

As any utility there are mistakes that are made, and FiOS being such a "hot" service its in the lime light and i would believe that many accident in similarity or more extreme happen everyday. It sounds like verizon went above and beyond in making the situation right and should be commended for their dedication to customers. and let it be noted that verizon is a mover and shaker in the communications industry for bringing fiber to our homes and leading us into the future. currently my area doesn't have access to fios and i would welcome verizon into this market with open arms. -Keith From Rochester NY
