Verizon today announced that it will deliver its broadband fiber-to-the-premises FiOS Internet services to Tishman Speyer’s Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, one of the largest apartment complexes in New York City and maybe the country.
The agreement to bring FiOS to residents in this 110-building, 11,232 –unit complex is the largest Verizon has signed so far for a multiple-dwelling-unit in an urban area.
FiOS Internet is already available for sale to more than 7.5 million premises in parts of 17 states, and our penetration for the service averaged 20.6 percent across all markets at the end of 2007.
As Verizon aggressively deploys FiOS to consumers living in single family homes, the company is also focused on offering FiOS to consumers living in multi-dwelling-units (MDUs). Eric Cevis is the Verizon executive in charge of our MDU strategy and in this short video he explains why we’re moving in this direction now.
But briefly, one in every four households served in areas where Verizon offers FiOS service is an MDU. So obviously, this is a key market. In fact many MDUs throughout Verizon’s service footprint already have FiOS installed, and our deployment to MDUs will continue to grow.
Before Verizon can bring FiOS to a MDU we must first obtain permission from the property owner, condo association or other similar organization. Once that agreement is in place, we can begin to deploy FiOS.
We’re always looking for new opportunities, so building owners or associations interested in FiOS in their buildings, can contact Verizon at www.verizon.com/communities.
Verizon’s all-fiber network passed more than 9.3 million premises at the end of 2007, and we expect to pass 18 million with fiber by the end of 2010.
