With all the talk about Verizon FiOS, we’ve also been revving up the speed of our copper-based High Speed Internet service. And we’ve been aggressively expanding it across our service territory.
Since January of this year, Verizon has offered consumer broadband service with a download connection speed of up to 7 megabits per second, and we’ve been deploying this faster broadband to more and more customers. That 7 Mbps download High Speed Internet service is now available to more than 3.4 million qualified households in parts of 20 states and the District of Columbia. At 7 Mbps, this offer is more than twice as fast as our previous DSL-enabled speeds, and it is faster than cable modem service offered by many of our competitors.
We think our newest copper-based service appeals to customers with big broadband appetites who can’t get FiOS. They’ll also like the fact that we deliver it on a dedicated line from our central office to the customer’s home, unlike cable companies’ shared neighborhood model, which can slow download speeds.
The expansion of 7 Mbps High Speed Internet has reached many small towns, in addition to larger metro areas, offering customers a viable alternative to cable modem Internet. The 7 Mbps service is currently available for the very competitive price of $42.99 per month on an annual plan, and an additional discount may apply if customers bundle the 7 meg service with other Verizon services.
