			<title><![CDATA[The Fight Against Telemarketers]]></title>

			<description><![CDATA[<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">Last month, the <I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal">Star-Ledger</I> (<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:State w:st="on">New Jersey</st1:State></st1:place>’s largest newspaper) <A href="http://www.nj.com/starledger/stories/index.ssf?/base/news-13/1212035805201940.xml&coll=1" target=_blank>published a story</A> on its front page called “Cellular companies hunt nameless nuisances.”  The article focused on how wireless consumers are becoming increasingly annoyed with text message spam and telemarketing calls sent to their wireless phones.  Verizon Wireless tries to stay ahead of the bad guys by using all our resources – network, legal, human and others – to help stop what is not only a nuisance, but an invasion of privacy, for our customers.  It is, after all, illegal to use an autodialer to call a cell phone, whether you’re delivering a voice or a text message.  Using sophisticated spam filters on our network, Verizon Wireless blocks hundreds of millions of spam messages each month from ever reaching our customers’ handsets.  And, when those messages do reach our customers, our team investigates and, when warranted, files lawsuits to make them stop – and in some cases put these companies out of business.   We also give our customers several options to prevent or block spam ranging from creating an alias to blocking all text messages.   There’s more information on how to do that in this <A href="http://news.vzw.com/news/2008/03/pr2008-03-31.html" target=_blank>news release</A></SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial"><FONT face=Arial size=2> <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p></FONT></SPAN></P>]]></description>

<P style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial (W1)'; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial"><o:p> </o:p></SPAN></P>
<P style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Arial (W1)'; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial">Verizon Wireless - and all the other participants in the recent 700 MHz spectrum auction - understood the FCC's rules for using that spectrum in advance of the auction.  Of course we'll abide by those rules.  As we work to put the spectrum we won to good use, if Google or anybody else has evidence that we aren't playing by the rules, there are legitimate and expedited ways to address that.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial">The latest CTIA wireless industry survey released earlier this month revealed that as of year-end 2007 more than 255 million wireless users were recorded in the U.S., roughly 84% of the population.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>The survey also showed a dramatic increase in SMS, with more than 48 billion messages reported for the month of December 2007 alone—1.6 billion messages per day.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>This represents an increase of 157% over December 2006.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>Additionally, a March report issued by the Federal Communications Commission showed that in comparison to other platforms for high-speed internet service, mobile wireless comprised more than 68% of the overall growth in high-speed lines from June 2006 to June 2007. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

<P><SPAN style="mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK2"><SPAN style="mso-bookmark: OLE_LINK3"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">The conference, scheduled for March 19 in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">New York City</st1:place></st1:City>, will focus on how traditional device and consumer electronics companies and entrepreneurs new to the wireless ecosystem can bring new wireless devices to the marketplace under Verizon Wireless’ Open Development initiative. The conference will establish shared goals of streamlining the certification and delivery of exciting new devices while preserving the company’s optimal network performance. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></SPAN></SPAN></P>

Lewis, vice president of the Open Development initiative at Verizon Wireless, said the conference agenda will focus on wireless devices, and that the initial specs will provide an important, tangible building block for device development. “Version 1.0 will provide the roadmap for wireless device visionaries and tinkerers, as well as existing device makers, to create consumer products not offered directly by the company, which can run on the nation’s most reliable network,” Lewis said. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></SPAN></SPAN></P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">While it was only a small sample, I’m not surprised our reps knew the answers.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>Verizon Wireless was the first national provider to put a declining ETF policy back in November 2006 (after first announcing the change in June 2006).<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">  </SPAN>Handset prices can be kept low because service providers use ETFs to subsidize those devices over the length of a contract, and if they choose to leave their contract before it expires, customers are asked to pay that fee. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

			<title><![CDATA[Selling Cell Numbers?]]></title>

<P><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">There have been recent <A href="http://www.nbc4.com/news/15163265/detail.html?rss=dc&psp=news " target=_blank>news </A>reports suggesting that a Seattle-based company called Intelius has created (or is creating) a cell phone directory, selling "unpublished and unlisted" numbers --including cell phone numbers.  The company has also apparently just filed for an IPO, so it claims not to be communicating externally due to a "quiet period." </SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"><?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">As you know, Verizon Wireless has consistently refused to provide our customers' numbers to any directory or third party, and we will continue to refuse to release this info.  Intelius seems to be data-mining on the Internet for private information, which we find entirely unacceptable.  Our stance on the issue effectively halted the industry-sponsored project a few years ago.  (What good is a directory if  65+ million customer numbers aren't included?)  Our position hasn't changed, and we still think a wireless directory is a "dumb idea."  </SPAN><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"><o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

<P class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">In contrast to Europe, handsets provided by <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">U.S.</st1:place></st1:country-region> carriers have software that protects consumers from fraud and theft.  In 2004, Verizon Wireless took an additional step and refused to participate in a national wireless phone directory, effectively halting the project.  A year later – in the first of its kind lawsuit, Verizon Wireless began to prosecute pretexters who tried to sell confidential customer telephone records.  As these examples demonstrate, we offer the consumer a complete system.  <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
