Remarkable Change in Communications Industry Business Models
User PhotoLink Hoewing posted in Policy on November 09, 2009, 01:30 PM EST
A question that keeps coming up in the net neutrality debate turns around business models.   Net neutrality advocates say that “openness” on the Internet is endangered and we need regulations to protect it.  We have argued that this is not true, that there has not been a threat to the openness of the Internet and hence no need for regulation. But what I have also pointed out in a recent blog post is that getting beyond standard, robust Internet connections, there are a range business models... I attended this morning's kick-off event where FiOS was lit for the first time in the District of Columbia.  As a DC resident, a Verizon employee and a general techie it was a little like a party and I was able to grab various attendees for interviews.Don't miss my chat with mayor Adrian Fenty while he wears a Verizon hard-hat and the video of the fiber splice that actually connected the first FiOS Hub in this Southeast neighborhood to our Central Office over fiber. As I mention in the video -... FCC Action Needed to Protect Consumer Choice
User PhotoEric Rabe posted in PolicyBlog on June 02, 2009, 03:36 PM EST
Although Verizon offers more than 100 HD channels in every FiOS TV market, there are two channels we currently can’t provide in high definition to our customers in downstate New York, western New York and northern New Jersey – the regional sports channels MSG and MSG Plus. As I've stated before, the reason is simple: Cablevision, which owns MSG and MSG Plus, refuses to supply the programming in high definition to us.  Then Cablevision advertises that they have the most high-definition sports...
